River Murray Youth Council

The River Murray Youth Council (RMYC) is a group of like-minded high school (Yr 8-12) students interested in learning more about environmental projects, environmental careers and/or taking action on local environment issues. The River Murray Youth Council has been running successfully since 2002.

Aims of the River Murray Youth Council

  • To raise youth awareness and encourage involvement in our environment
  • To empower youth to take action on environmental issues
  • Develop a network of youth environmental leaders
  • Establish links between schools and natural resource management organisations
  • Develop skills of young people to increase employment options

The Benefits include:

  • Meeting new people who have similar interests
  • Learning about our region’s environmental issues from Natural Resource Management (NRM) professionals in our region (guest speakers and mentors)
  • Opportunities to be involved in on-ground projects – within the catchment and in their local area
  • Opportunities to be involved in public speaking

Possible RMYC Activities:

  • Monthly meetings after school hours (transport to meeting is sometimes possible/provided with help of mentors)
  • Team building and leadership camps and activities
  • Development of School Environmental Action Plans
  • Presentations to peers about environmental issues, at schools and student forums
  • Involvement in tree planting, monitoring of local fauna, flora and waterways
  • Field trips to various places of local significance, to see the environmental issues first hand
  • Attending SA Youth Environment Conference & delivering workshops
  • Design and implementation of a project in their local area, with support from their mentors
  • Presentations to other groups (NRM Board, NRM Group, LAPs) about the activities of the Youth Council and the benefits that the students have received through their involvement
  • Development of School Environment Groups (where possible) who then undertake school and community-based environmental projects and update the RMYC group at each meeting

We aim to promote a strong sense of involvement amongst the youth, encouraging them to have input to decision making regarding the activities and structure of the Youth Council.
